Lewis profs visit Brazil, expand business partnerships
Lewis profs visit Brazil, expand business partnerships

Eye on Education
By Sherri Dauskurdas

Ian V. Gladding and Frank Rose, faculty members from the Lewis University College of Business, spent part of their summer in Brazil, seeking to find new business opportunities for local companies and expand learning opportunities for Lewis students.

The trip, funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant, provided the Lewis faculty the opportunity to meet with Brazilian businesses, government agencies and educational institutions, building upon existing relationships with universities in the global LaSallian university network.

“Brazil is on the move,” said Rose. “If we at Lewis want to learn more about the country and explore current and future opportunities there, our LaSallian sister institutions in Porto Alegre and Niteroi are eager to help us.”

The College of Business is planning to lead a group of students and companies on a business study trip to Brazil next May and to organize a symposia focusing on Brazil in the spring of 2010, focusing on topics related to the role of business in sustainable development in Brazil and the U.S. It would include speakers from both nations, featuring leading international experts in industries important to Will County.

For more information about the Lewis University program, contact Ian V. Gladding, professor of business administration and director of the international business and contemporary global studies, at 815-836-5221 or gladdiia@lewisu.edu.

St. Xavier graduates meeting demand for nurses
One-hundred percent of Saint Xavier University’s May 2009 nursing program graduates passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for registered nurses.

All of St. Xavier’s 44 graduates passed the examination, compared to the average rate of 88.91 percent of first-time candidates educated in the U.S. NCLEX exams are developed and administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and designed to test the knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to the safe and effective practice of nursing at the entry level.

Grants and awards
St. Xavier University has received a two-year, $256,490 federal grant to support graduate-level academic offerings for Hispanic-American students. The two-year-long Bilingual English-Spanish for Speech-Language Pathology (BEST for SLP) project will start in January 2010, with grant funds covering 100 percent of the project costs.

St. Xavier also has received a two-year, $242,560 federal grant to implement a textbook rental program for several general education courses. Beginning the 2010 fall semester, grant money will supply about 2,100 rental books for some of the most populated general education courses, and will cover 100 percent of the program’s expenses. Rental fees collected over the two-year grant period will be used to continue adding courses and textbooks to the rental program.

College of DuPage received a $1,366,549 grant from the Illinois Community College Board to improve opportunities for adults who aspire to earn their GED, develop basic reading and math skills, or learn English as a second language. The Adult Education and ESL Program at College of DuPage is the largest literacy provider in District 502, with approximately 7,350 students at 31 district locations served this year

C.O.D also received a $39,000 Adult Volunteer Literacy grant, awarded by the Illinois State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State for the continued support of People Educating People, an adult volunteer tutoring program that provides individualized instruction and tutoring in reading, math and ESL literacy.

On the move in education
Saint Xavier University’s Nicholas Kuhr, assistant director of public safety, will head the newly created Office of Emergency Management and Preparedness at the campus, overseeing the university’s disaster preparedness and response efforts.

Felicia Griffin has been named director of communications for Elgin Community College. Griffin will be responsible for media relations, internal and external stakeholder relations, and legislative affairs.
